In Soviet Union women participating in WWII were erased from history, remaining as the occasional anecdote of a female sniper or simply as medical staff or, at best, radio specialists. The word “front-line girl” (frontovichka) became a terrible insult, synonimous to “whore”. Hundreds thousand of girls who went to war to protect their homeland with their very lives, who came back injured or disabled, with medals for valor, had to hide it to protect themselves from public scorn.

This has always happened in history: Women do something important. Then they get shamed for it (so nobody will talk about it) and it gets erased from history.

And then certain men will say: “Women suck, they’ve never done anything important.”

Look into history and learn that women have played a far greater role then douches (present and past) wanted you to know.

This reminds me of how Egyptian women, who participated in Arab Spring protests in great numbers and were critical to the revolution that ousted Mubarak’s regime, have only been treated with great disdain and violence for their passion and work.

Remember that time I made a post reminding people that okaying women for front-line combat is not the beginning of women fighting in wars, but only the beginning of men finally realizing we weren’t going to shut up about it? Remember after I posted that some dudebro came into my inbox and tried to claim I was wrong and that only a few “rogue women” were fighters?

Again, we have fought in every conflict and every war since the beginning of time. We’re the ones most likely to be victims of war crimes so you better fucking believe we fight for our homes, our people, our lives.

We fight alongside men and help them, save them, die for them as battle buddies and they turn around and write us out of their histories. They erase our efforts, our sacrifices, our deaths.

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.
(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)
Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?
Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?
Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)
Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?
(The class was in uproar.)
Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class broke out into laughter.)
Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.
Student : That is it sir… Exactly ! The link between man and GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

Maybe she isn’t my favourite clone, but she is by far the most attractive one. And can we just take a moment to appreciate that the seemingly lesbian clone is also the only clone that on an average day lights up into more smiles than the rest of the characters put together for the duration of the show. I mean, this is kinda awesome. She’s a gay lesbian. She’s a brainy American hippie lesbian that gets to feel good about herself, have sex, eat ice-cream, smile a lot, make mistakes, smoke pot and crack the code. Without anyone passing judgement on any of it.

No, I don’t think you really understand. She’s a happy queer woman in fiction. She isn’t mad. She’s not dead. Yet, and despite that disclaimer it’s still a step in the right direction. But neither is she perfect, she’s not the definition of a role model nor is she a cautionary tale. She’s a little bit of a dumbass and very intelligent. She’s a grey character, a human one.

And more importantly she had lady-sex and lived to tell the tale. In fact she had lady-sex, got betrayed, but still ended up providing the solution and answer to some of the clones’ more burning questions. Partly due to actually having lady-sex and the lady-on-lady affections surrounding that physical romp. And she did all of this without once having sex with or deferring to any man. It’s like…she’s a lesbian, you know, in a world where that isn’t associated with straight man porn, moral decay or a straight-washed moral paragon of “hi y’all, I’m sexually fluid and act like a straight woman because we’re all the same”. She falls between the cracks of objectification and heteronormative preaching, and becomes complex human in a way gay characters seldom are (at least not on TV).

Best thing with all of this is that nothing within the context of the actual show is moralising her actions or feelings. So it becomes a tale of art imitating life, imitating art, as I end up a gay queer myself after watching her scenes.
